Mazda CX-5
Model Years Produced: 2017 to Current
Summary
In what is easily the most crowded segment of cars, Mazda has managed to thrive with the CX-5 by pushing it slightly upmarket (or “premium,” as journalists like to say) and focusing on driving dynamics. With a comfortable interior and sharp steering, the CX-5 is a pleasure to drive whether you’re simply cruising or you’re cornering, certainly outclassing most of its competitors in the latter department.
Where the CX-5 falls somewhat flat is in cargo capacity and fuel economy. Fuel economy certainly isn’t bad, but it’s not as good as its competitors. Interior volume, on the other hand, is a major letdown considering the size of the vehicle; competitors like the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V both provide far more capacity for seating and hauling.
The turbo engine became optional beginning in 2019, 2020 models received an updated infotainment system, and 2022 models have AWD as standard.
