Summary

The F-150 Lightning is the first “real” electric pickup to hit the market. Sure, the Rivian R1T was out first, but it’s a luxury/lifestyle midsize unibody, while the F-150 has been the best-selling vehicle in the world for decades and is a “proper” body-on-frame, full-size truck.

As an F-150, the Lightning will be immediately familiar to anyone who has ever been inside any other F-150, with an identical interior and a near-identical exterior save for some subtle modifications for aerodynamics and some styling tweaks to identify it as the “electric” version. Though it trades the gas-powered F-150’s live rear axle and leaf springs for independent rear suspension and coils, it will still happily tow up to 10,000 lbs…but not for long distances, as towing annihilates the range.

There are two battery options: the “standard” 98 kWh, and a huge “extended range” 131 kWh which is optional on the XLT and Lariat trims but standard on the Platinum. Ford doesn’t give the big battery away – it’s $15k on the XLT and almost $7k on the Lariat, but it does add a whopping 80 miles of range. The standard battery is only good for 240 miles and the Lightning doesn’t have the most impressive charging performance, so it’s a tough call as to whether the bigger battery is worth the extra cash.

If you want a “real” electric truck, this may be your only option…but it’s definitely not a bad one.
