Lucid Air
Summary
Lucid arrived on the scene in 2022 and immediately took the motoring world by surprise with their combination of extreme power outputs and as-yet-unseen range. Never before had a production electric car been able to go over 500 miles, especially not a luxury sedan with four doors and five seats. Finally, there was a car to dethrone the Tesla Model S – ironic, as the CEO of Lucid had once been the Tesla Model S chief engineer.
The Air is a remarkable vehicle, capable of wafting over washboard roads with ease before ripping off 0-60 and 1/4-mile times faster than any other production vehicle. The base “Pure” version may not be quite as quick nor does it have a battery capable of that aforementioned 500+ mile range, but even it can do 400 miles on a charge – better than just about any other EV out there today. The interior isn’t class-leading in regard to luxury, but it still is a nice place to be and far surpasses Tesla’s interiors in regard to fit, finish, and material choices. The Air is a packaging marvel too, with a cavernous trunk and a remarkably spacious frunk that are almost enough to make you stop wishing there was a wagon version.
What the Air has in physical engineering, it lacks in software engineering. Its infotainment is slow and somewhat buggy, and it does not yet support Android Auto. However, Lucid regularly pushes over-the-air software updates – one of which brought Apple CarPlay support previously – which have dramatically improved performance and stability.
