Rivian R1T

Rivian R1T

Summary

The electric vehicle revolution allowed a few new faces to appear in the automotive scene, one of which was Rivian. Rather than try to make a flagship luxury vehicle or a cheap economy EV, Rivian went directly after the reigning electric champ Tesla and beat their Cybertruck to the punch with the first electric pickup, the R1T.

The R1T may be a truck, but it delivers on the luxury front too. It comes standard with air suspension, heated and ventilated seats, a heated steering wheel, and arguably enough advanced driving tech to qualify as a “level 2” system. When fitted with an obscene four electric motors, it’s ridiculously fast, and can crawl over difficult terrain with ease thanks to the control provided by an individual motor for each wheel and the ground clearance from not having differential carriers and axles. Its charging speeds also decimate most other 400V-architecture electric vehicles, and it boasts impressive range considering its weight and power.

There have been some teething pains, as is to be expected from a brand new auto manufacturer – the power tonneau covers frequently breaking to the point where Rivian completely removed them from 2023 models, for example – but the car is constantly improving through over-the-air updates and hardware upgrades.
