Problems

  • Carbon deposits
  • High pressure fuel pump (HPFP) – symptoms often include the car taking a long time to start. This has been addressed on later engines.
  • Stretched timing chains:
    • There was a TSB in 2012 to replace the oil seal on the chain tensioner
    • BMW redesigned the timing chain in 2015
    • Some cars, but not all, had recalls issued for MY12-14
