Problems
- Carbon deposits
- High pressure fuel pump (HPFP) – symptoms often include the car taking a long time to start. This has been addressed on later engines.
- Stretched timing chains:
- There was a TSB in 2012 to replace the oil seal on the chain tensioner
- BMW redesigned the timing chain in 2015
- Some cars, but not all, had recalls issued for MY12-14
