Problems

Don’t be scared by the big list below – the Magnum family of engines are considered to be largely reliable.

  • Squealing/chirping belts can be caused by:
    • Worn serpentine belt
    • Failed bearings in idler pulleys, alternator pulley, or A/C compressor pulley
    • Worn grommet on the harmonic balancer pulley
  • Radiators can fail from age
  • Coolant leaks can be caused by:
    • Dried out and/or rotted radiator hoses
    • Failed thermostat/water pump gasket
    • Broken radiator
    • Failed hose that runs to the expansion tank
    • Failed timing chain cover gasket
    • Failed quick-disconnects that attach to the radiator on the transmission cooler lines
    • Failed head gasket
  • Overheating can be caused by:
    • Failed thermostat or water pump
    • Failed viscous fan clutch
    • Bad coolant – can be fixed by flushing the system
    • Failed radiator cap – there is a new 18 pound cap
    • Dirty radiator
    • Air in the cooling system – burp the system to get it out
    • Clogged catalytic converter
  • Oil leaks:
    • Rear main seal (RMS)
    • Valve cover gaskets
    • Oil pressure sending unit
