Problems
Don’t be scared by the big list below – the Magnum family of engines are considered to be largely reliable.
- Squealing/chirping belts can be caused by:
- Worn serpentine belt
- Failed bearings in idler pulleys, alternator pulley, or A/C compressor pulley
- Worn grommet on the harmonic balancer pulley
- Radiators can fail from age
- Coolant leaks can be caused by:
- Dried out and/or rotted radiator hoses
- Failed thermostat/water pump gasket
- Broken radiator
- Failed hose that runs to the expansion tank
- Failed timing chain cover gasket
- Failed quick-disconnects that attach to the radiator on the transmission cooler lines
- Failed head gasket
- Overheating can be caused by:
- Failed thermostat or water pump
- Failed viscous fan clutch
- Bad coolant – can be fixed by flushing the system
- Failed radiator cap – there is a new 18 pound cap
- Dirty radiator
- Air in the cooling system – burp the system to get it out
- Clogged catalytic converter
- Oil leaks:
- Rear main seal (RMS)
- Valve cover gaskets
- Oil pressure sending unit
