BMW 2-Series (G42)

BMW 2-Series (G42)

Model Years Produced: 2021 to Current

Summary

Somehow, the second-generation BMW 2-Series has grown in both size and weight while simultaneously losing usable space inside. Despite the extra heft, though, it’s no slower than before – even if it is a bit softer. In fact, the M240i is nearly as quick as the prior-generation M2.

Based on the CLAR platform, the G42 2-Series shares a great deal of parts with many other BMW products, with the G22 4-Series serving as its primary donor. As a result, it weighs nearly as much as a similarly-specced 4-Series despite being a much smaller car. The plus side is that parts are not in short supply, and the shared components have generally been stress-tested already.

Primary Criticisms

Major

  • Much heavier than it should be considering its size – it weighs nearly as much as an equivalent 4-Series
  • Despite being a larger car than the previous-generation 2-Series, the back seats are far less usable and aren’t fit for anyone other than children

Minor

  • Lackluster steering feel
  • The M2’s styling is…controversial, to say the least
