BMW 4-Series (G22)

BMW 4-Series (G22)

Model Years Produced: 2020 to Current

Summary

The 4-Series is the stylish version of BMW’s bread-and-butter compact car, the 3-Series, and the G22 generation is the latest iteration. It continues the trend set by its siblings in the BMW lineup of becoming heavier, larger, and softer than its predecessors – and unfortunately, it also follows the trend of BMW cars becoming more ugly too. That said, the interior is a fantastic place to be, and BMW’s chassis and engine tuning is unparalleled by their competitors.

While there are many variants of the G22 4-Series available, the M440i is the best “normal” version, and the M4 Competition turns everything up to 11.

M440i

The G22 M440i is nearly identical to the G20 M340i in most respects. While it of course trades the traditional three-box look of the G20 3-Series for a more swoopy coupe appearance – and replaces the G20’s handsome face with a pig nose – the interior and chassis is functionally the same. One notable callout is that the “B58” engine has the assistance of an 11hp electric motor courtesy of an integrated starter-generator, making the M440i officially a mild hybrid (or MHEV).

It’s more of a somewhat-sporty luxury car than a true sports coupe, but if you’re looking for something comfortable that can still provide some fun on command, it’s not a bad choice by any means.

M4 Competition

The G82 M4 and its sibling, the G80 M3, are arguably the best compact sports cars that BMW has produced since the iconic E46 M3. The “S58” engine feels like a rocket engine strapped to the roof, and when combined with the optional xDrive AWD system, the speed and grip that these cars are able to unleash is mindblowing.

The base M4 is not available with an automatic transmission, so those wanting an automatic will have to step up to the M4 Competition – which itself is not available with a manual. The Competition increases power from 473 to 503hp and also steps up the wheel size an inch to 19s in front and 20s in back, but otherwise is identical to the regular M4.
