BMW 5-Series (G30)
Model Years Produced: 2017 to 2023
Summary
The BMW 5-Series has been the luxury sedan standard for decades, relentlessly refined into its current state. Although it’s neither as light nor as nimble as it was in years prior, it’s still the benchmark for how to balance comfort and performance in one package.
Although available with 4, 6, and 8 cylinders – and even in a hybrid configuration – the G30-generation 5-Series is best experienced with BMW’s raucous V8. The M550i is a perfectly pleasant sport sedan all on its own, but the M5 is a true super saloon – especially when fitted with the Competition package.
BMW has ended production of the G30 after model year 2023 in anticipation of launching its new “G60” generation for 2024, so it is no longer possible to custom order one from the factory. However, it is still possible to buy new cars off the lot. Unfortunately, the G60 has so far only been announced with 4-cylinder, 6-cylinder, and hybrid versions, and the G60 M5 is not anticipated to hit showrooms until 2025.
Primary Criticisms
Major
- The N63/S63 engine is infamous for reliability issues even in its “T3” technical update, and it’s highly recommended to have an extended powertrain warranty or a good mechanic who can take care of you for when you’re out of warranty.
Minor
- Insulated to the point of making it difficult to feel fun or performance, even on the M5
- Numb steering

M550i xDrive
The M550i features BMW’s twin-turbo 4.4L V8 and standard “xDrive” AWD, which is a rear-biased AWD system unlike the systems in its competitors. The M550i also wears “M Sport” body work to give it a more aggressive look. Rear-axle steering is standard to make it more agile, though reviewers have complained that it does make the handling feel artificial.

M5
The M5 features an “S” version of their 4.4L twin-turbo V8, which cranks the output up to 600hp. It curiously deletes the rear-axle steering from the M550i.
A “Competition” package is available which increases the power to 617hp, stiffens the springs and engine mounts, changes the front camber, lowers the right height, and includes a performance exhaust.
