BMW Z4 (G29)

Summary

The third-generation “G29” version of the Z4 is a worthy successor to the Z4 name…though it’s fair to say that the “Z4” name doesn’t actually mean all that much. It’s simply a 2-door roadster based on the same platform as the 3-Series, with the same engine and transmission and suspension and interior and a variety of other components. While this means it’s a little heavier than it probably should be for its size, it also means that it’s actually financially viable to produce.

The G29 Z4 has a fraternal twin in the form of the Toyota GR Supra. Although the two are nearly identical cars with different bodies, the Z4 receives BMW’s current-generation interior while the Supra receives last-generation components. The Z4 has also been tuned to be softer and more comfortable – more of a grand-tourer – while the Supra is sharper and more aggressive. The Supra also offers a manual transmission and a metal (fixed) roof, neither of which are options on the Z4 – though conversely, the Supra is not available as a convertible.

Even though the Z4 is a convertible, BMW has done an outstanding job on noise insulation. It is nearly as quiet inside as a car with a fixed roof, far more livable when the top is up than something like a Miata or even a Porsche 718. If you want a roadster but don’t necessarily want a knife-edge sports car, the G29 Z4 may be exactly what you’re looking for.

The M40i trim level of the Z4 receives the ubiquitous “B58” inline-six engine along with the ZF 8HP transmission.
