Mercedes-Benz E-Class (W213)
Model Years Produced: 2017 to 2024
Summary
The W213-generation Mercedes E-Class is their latest midsize luxury sedan, although it won’t be for long – 2024 will be its last model year before a new one replaces it. It runs the gamut from sedate 4-cylinder to snarling, tire-shredding V8, and features some of the most beautiful interior appointments in the class. It can be found in nearly every “car” form factor: coupe, convertible, sedan, and even wagon.
Released in 2017, the W213 is one of the last Mercedes vehicles you can buy that are engineered well without going totally overboard on technology, though there are still hints of even that in this car (such as with the E53’s mild-hybrid powertrain and the wild steering wheel controls on the post-facelift models). The interior is beautiful rather than a vomit of touchscreens, and materials and build quality are largely what you would expect for the price…which is quite high, even compared to its German and American rivals. Even so, the W213 should not be overlooked if what you want is both fun and comfort.

- Touch controls on steering wheel and infotainment are fussy and annoying
- The E53’s complex powertrain isn’t something that you want to own out of warranty
- No complimentary maintenance included with a new vehicle purchase, unlike competitors

AMG E53 4MATIC+
The E53 isn’t a “true” AMG, at least in the classic sense of the word. Its 3.0L inline-six isn’t hand-built by the AMG team, and while it’s reasonably quick, it’s not as brutal or charismatic as the V8-powered E63.
The E53’s I6 is bolstered by a turbocharger and an electric supercharger, plus a mild hybrid system that powers a starter-generator sandwiched between the engine and transmission that can also provide an electric motor boost on demand. The standard air suspension is AMG-tuned and the bodywork is more aggressive than the standard E-Class.

AMG E63 S 4MATIC+
The E63 S is a bonkers sedan. If the M5 and the RS7 are sleek and subdued, the E63 S is loud and in your face, a German counterpart to the Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing. Like the Blackwing, it also has relatively good steering. Unlike the Blackwing, its interior is gorgeous from top to bottom…but there’s a reason its price is so much higher.
Unlike the E53, the E63 S is only available in the US as a sedan or wagon. 2023 is its last model year.
