Problems

All Vehicles

  • Carbon deposits (needs cleaning every 40-70k miles)
  • Fuel injectors:
    • May leak or get clogged
    • If not fixed, this may cause the O2 sensors to fail, and replacing those may require engine removal on certain vehicles
  • High pressure fuel pump failure
  • Oil leaks:
    • Valve cover gaskets
    • Spark plug tube seals – causes misfires, fixing may require engine removal on certain vehicles
    • Oil pan
    • Oil filter housing
    • Front crankshaft seal
    • Rear timing chain covers – fixing may require engine removal on certain vehicles

Certain Vehicles

  • BSM and BXA engines: Variable intake manifold:
    • Plastic components in the intake manifold become brittle over time, which may result in the flaps getting loose and causing a loss of power or misfires
    • In extreme cases, broken pieces of plastic may fall into the engine and cause internal engine damage
    • Inspect the inside of the intake manifold with an endoscope, or listen for a rattling noise between 1000-2000 rpm
    • Usually requires replacement between 60-100k miles
